Melbourn Village Fete & Music on the Moor

There is definitely a doggy theme this year. The Dog and Duck show was so popular last year that we’ve asked them to come back and show us more of their Collie dog skills and duck antics. And to give you inspiration, we’ve invited the Chasing Tails Fly Ball team along to teach us about this dog sport and demonstrate the speed and agility of their dogs.

The arena is going to be as busy as ever with regulars like the egg throwing and tug of war – although in this year’s tug of war, there is a trophy up for grabs for the best team of eight.

There will be plenty of stalls and attractions to amuse all age groups. Categories include cakes, preserves, flower arranging, vegetable animals, photography, mini gardens, and a kids colouring competition. Every year, we seem to have more attendance, and nowhere is this more obvious than with the classic vehicles. As well as our usual bar, BBQ, and tea and cake selection, we are introducing a food court, which will include Roastaholics spit roasts, sweet and savoury crepes made to order, and freshly cooked donuts, as well as the ever-essential ice cream van!

Saturday 21 September to Sunday 29 September

THE multi-talented Meera Syal is to appear at this year’s Royston Arts Festival.

The star of the television comedy show The Kumars at No 42, best-selling writer, comedian, singer, journalist, producer and actress will talk about her diverse career in The Small World of Meera Syal at Greneway School on Saturday 28 September. The evening will include a question and answer session and book signing.

Festival-goers will also be able to book onto one hour long workshops with an Aardman model-maker, showing them how to make their own clay Shaun the Sheep or Gromit.

These are just two of around 50 events and exhibitions taking place during this year’s arts festival under the theme A Small World, running from Saturday 21 September to Sunday 29 September.

The Rotary Club of Royston Charity Kite Festival
on Sunday, August 4, will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm

THOUSANDS of people are expected to attend this year’s Rotary Club of Royston’s Charity Kite Festival on Therfield Heath on August 4.

During the past 10 years the event has raised more than £45,000 for both local and national charities.

This years charity receiving support from the event will be the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth.

Displays are expected to include Indian Kite Flying, the Royston Power Kiters and a Teddy Bear Parachute Drop.

About 60 stalls – most of which will be run by local community groups – will be holding activities around the main arena.

Entry is adults (14 and over) £2 and children free.
There is free car parking.

Foxton 5K Fun Run 2013 will be held on
Sunday 8 September at 10 a.m.

Come and have a go at the Chartwell challenge! The course is a 5K loop, mainly off road with a single significant incline, starting and finishing at the Pavilion, Foxton, Cambridge, CB22 6RN. A shorter mini fun run for those aged under 6 will also be held on the recreation ground, starting and finishing at Foxton Pavilion. Car parking and a changing area with toilets is available at the Pavilion.

There is a limit of 225 entrants and there will be prizes and timings for the top 3 runners in each category.

Entries are now open.  Entry is £6 per person, £15 for a family of three or £20 for a family of four. Children aged under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

“MEET-IN-MELBOURN”

Are you new to the area or live in Melbourn or surrounding villages, but feel a little isolated as you don’t know many people in the village?

Meet- in- Melbourn is a new networking initiative to bring people together to make new contacts with a view to sharing ideas for social events such as quiz nights, theatre trips and days or evenings out with a group of like-minded people in the local area.

If you are interested, the initial dates booked to meet up have been arranged by Diane to take place in:

• The Green Man, Shepreth
  Saturday 22 June and Saturday 13 July 4 – 6 pm
• (No monthly meet in August as holiday time)

‘Meet in Melbourn’  is an initiative to bring people together who may be new to the area, be less mobile or now on their own so don’t get out and socialise as much as they used to.  I have arranged a few meetings since December and several people have come along and met new people, found some who share similar interests and generally had the opportunity to join with others in a social chat, made up teams on a few quiz nights and attended  a  group meal out.  This is for adults of any age who feel they may enjoy some of the events as part of a group.  So far people have come along in the age range of 30’s to 70’s bringing people and communities together! This is for all the surrounding villages not just for Melbourn residents.
